Intellectual Property Policy

Last updated:

This page is about ownership: who owns the illustrations, photos and words on petpetal.shop, what you may do with a Pet Petal piece once it is yours, why we keep brand, team and character names off our products, and how to raise a trademark or design concern with us. Copyright takedown notices have their own step-by-step process on the DMCA page. For anything here, write to [email protected].

Ownership in brief

  • The Pet Petal name, our breed illustrations, product photos and written content belong to Pet Petal or are used with permission.
  • Owning a printed piece lets you display it, gift it or resell that one item. It does not let you copy the design.
  • We do not print brand, team or character names or logos, on any product.
  • Personalisation fields are for your pet’s name, years and your own words, not trademarked names.
  • Trademark or design concerns: email [email protected] with the subject “IP concern”; we reply within 24 hours on business days.

1. What belongs to Pet Petal

The following content on the site is owned by Pet Petal or used under permission from its owner, and is protected by copyright, trademark and related laws:

  • Breed illustrations in our three styles: Watercolor Style, Floral Wreath Style and Line Art Style, including the flower arrangements, wreath shapes and lettering layouts around them.
  • Product images and mockups, such as a peony suncatcher shown against a kitchen window or a canvas print styled above a loveseat.
  • Written content: product descriptions, verse options in the verse select, collection introductions, help and policy pages.
  • The Pet Petal name and logo, and the look of our pages.

Mentioning another company’s name on our help pages, for example when we name WooCommerce or Cloudflare in our Privacy Policy, does not mean that company endorses us, and those names belong to their owners.

2. Living with a Pet Petal piece: what is fine

A piece you bought is yours to enjoy. You are welcome to:

  • Hang a suncatcher in any window, put a canvas print on any wall and keep a garden slate by the roses.
  • Photograph your piece in your home and share that photo with friends or online, for example the tree with three acrylic ornaments for three cats.
  • Give the piece as a gift, or pass it on to family. A memorial stone moved to a new garden stays yours.
  • Sell your own used piece second-hand, as a single item.
  • Share links to our product pages and collections, such as ornaments or memorial gifts.
  • Quote a short line from our pages with a link back to the page.

3. What needs our written permission

  • Scanning, tracing or downloading an illustration to print it onto other items, whether mugs, shirts, cards or stickers.
  • Uploading our designs or mockups to a marketplace, print service or another online store.
  • Using an illustration in a logo, a pet business’s branding or advertising.
  • Copying our product descriptions or help pages onto another site.
  • Using the Pet Petal name in a way that suggests a connection with us that does not exist.
  • Collecting our images or text in bulk with automated tools. Ordinary search engine indexing is welcome.

If you have a project in mind, such as a pet charity raffle or a school fundraiser that would like to use an image, write to us. We read every request and answer honestly, though we cannot promise to say yes.

4. Why we keep brands, teams and characters off our products

Pet Petal makes art about your pet, not about anyone else’s brand. Our catalogue does not include, and we will not print, names or logos of companies, sports teams, leagues, colleges, cartoon or film characters, game titles, or famous people. That includes a pet dressed as a well-known character, a jersey with a team crest, or a brand slogan in the tagline field. These names and images are protected trademarks or copyrights owned by others, and printing them without a licence would be unfair to the owners and to you.

Personalisation text: what we print and what we decline

“Biscuit”YesA pet’s name, exactly as typed
“Luna 2012 – 2026”YesA name and years in the years field
“Forever in our garden”YesYour own short tagline

A brand slogan or product nameNoSlogans and product names are owned by those brands
Song lyrics or lines from a published poemNoThe words are copyrighted by their authors

4.1 When a pet shares a name with a character

Plenty of dogs and cats are named after characters, and that is fine. A cat called by a character’s name is still your cat, and the pet’s name field exists for exactly that. What we do not print is the name presented as a theme: added logos, character catchphrases, franchise titles or a tagline that ties the piece to the brand. If you are unsure whether your text crosses that line, email us before ordering and we will tell you.

4.2 What happens if restricted text is typed

The live preview shows whatever you type, but before printing we may check the text against this policy. If an order contains a trademarked name, logo reference or copied lyric, we email you to suggest alternative wording. If no workable text can be agreed, we cancel that item and refund it in full. You can also change your text yourself within 24 hours of placing the order through Cancel or Change an Order.

5. Your text and your pet’s name

The names, dates and taglines you type remain yours. By placing the order, you let us print them on the piece and keep them with the order record, as our Privacy Policy describes. We do not use a customer’s personalisation in advertising or on product pages. When you type text, you confirm you have the right to use it, which is simple for a pet’s name and your own words and is the reason we decline the items in the table above.

6. How our designs are made

Every piece is printed to order from our breed illustration files. The designs show a breed, not a particular animal, and they are not made from customer photos; there is no photo upload on the site. This also means no one else’s photograph of their pet is copied into our catalogue. Where a design is created from licensed material, we hold that licence. If you believe a design copies a specific photo or artwork of yours, use the DMCA process so we can compare them properly.

7. Reporting a trademark or design concern

If you own a trademark, registered design or another right and believe something on petpetal.shop uses it without permission, email [email protected] with the subject “IP concern” and include:

  1. Your name, email address and postal address, and whether you own the right or act for the owner.
  2. The right concerned, for example a trademark registration number and the country of registration, or an image of the protected design.
  3. The full petpetal.shop link to each product or page involved, and what on that page you mean.
  4. A brief explanation of the problem, and a statement that the information you give is accurate to the best of your knowledge.

Rights holders in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the four countries we sell to, can all use this route.

8. What happens after you report

Steps after an intellectual property report
StepWhat we do
AcknowledgeWe reply within 24 hours on business days to confirm we have your report.
ReviewWe look at the page, the design file and any licence we hold, and ask you for anything missing.
ActIf the concern is valid, we remove the product, replace the image or change the text, across every product where it appears.
CloseWe email you to explain what was changed or, if we disagree, why.
CustomersIf open orders are affected, we contact those customers and offer another design or a refund.

9. When someone copies Pet Petal

If you see our illustrations, mockups or descriptions on another store or marketplace, we would be grateful to know. Send the link to [email protected]. If you bought a piece elsewhere that looks like ours and it is not what you expected, we cannot handle that order, but your report helps us protect other customers.

10. Everyday situations

My dog’s name is the same as a famous cartoon dog. Can I order an ornament with that name?

Yes. Type the name in the pet’s name field and it is printed in our lettering, next to our breed illustration. We only decline it if the order adds that character’s look, logo, catchphrase or franchise title.

Can I add my favourite team’s name to a canvas print of my retriever?

No, sorry. Team names, league names and crests are trademarks, and we do not print them on any canvas print, mug, throw pillow or blanket. A colour choice or a tagline in your own words, such as “Game day buddy”, is fine.

Can I use a line from a well-known poem on a memorial stone?

Short lines from published poems and songs are usually protected, so please choose one of the verses in our verse select instead, or write a few words of your own. Something as simple as “Always by the garden gate” can mean more than a famous quote. Take your time choosing; there is no rush.

I run a pet grooming salon. Can I put your watercolor poodle on my business cards?

Not without written permission, because that is commercial use of our illustration. Email us with what you have in mind and we will reply within 24 hours on business days.

Can I post a photo of my new suncatcher and tag the shop?

Of course. Sharing a photo of your own piece is always welcome, and you do not need to ask. When friends ask where it came from, a link to our suncatchers is the easiest way to show them the design.

My sister in Perth and I want matching garden slates. Can she reorder the same design later?

Yes. Both of you are buying printed pieces from our catalogue, so either of you can order the same breed, style and wording at any time. What neither of you may do is copy the slate’s illustration onto something else, such as a printed card for a celebration of life, without asking us first. If you would like that, email us and explain the occasion; we answer every request personally.

I found a store selling a canvas that looks exactly like yours. Is it from you?

Our designs are offered on petpetal.shop. If you see a Pet Petal illustration on another store and are not sure where it came from, please send us the link as described in section 9 and we will look into it.

11. Ideas you send us

Customers sometimes suggest a new breed, flower or verse. We are glad to hear them. If we add something similar, we may do so without payment or credit, and we will never publish your name, your pet’s name or your message without asking first.

12. Contact for permissions and questions
